The nonprofit Community Alliance for Learning was established in 2000-01 to administer the WriterCoach Connection (WCC) literacy program, which helps develop the writing and critical thinking skills of students in public secondary schools. WCC recruits and trains community volunteers to work with the students one on one, in class, on their English writing assignments, throughout the school year.
For the 2010-11 school year, 400 trained volunteer writer coaches are serving 1,500 students at nine school sites in four East Bay districts. In Oakland, WCC serves students at Media and Mandela high schools, in the Fruitvale District.
