Experience Corps believes that adults 55+ can be a huge source of support in addressing some of society's biggest challenges. As a result, Experience Corps recruits, trains, places and supports these adults to be tutors, mentors and classroom assistants throughout Oakland elementary schools. Tutors serve before, during or after school and provide one-on-one or small group support for children who need more individual attention. Not only does the culture of the schools become intergenerational, but students' academic performance and self-esteem go up and Experience Corps members' mental, emotional, and physical health and welfare are increased as a result. A great win-win for the community!
