CAFL's WriterCoach Connection (WCC) program provides one-on-one writing support, in class, to help develop students' writing and critical thinking skills. WCC trains community volunteers to work with students on their classroom writing assignments. The program serves every student in a given cohort (classroom or grade level) with eight to a dozen individual writing conferences throughout the school year, collaborating closely with teachers to support assignment and curricular goals. In Oakland, the program currently serves two of the small academies on the Fremont Federated campus in the Fruitvale District, with plans to expand to the third small school on that campus and to Oakland School for the Arts during the 2011-12 school year.
