JOB TITLE:  PROGRAM MANAGER 
 
 
The Super Stars Literacy, Inc. Program Manager leads a team of Group Leaders who are directly responsible for operating the After-school literacy program with Title I elementary schools in the Oakland/East Bay region.
 
Group Leaders are AmeriCorps members who typically have limited backgrounds in education, so the Program Manager plays a crucial role in coaching these staff members and ensuring that they develop the skills necessary to operate a successful program.  With the support of the Program Manager, Group Leaders will ensure that each school-based program runs effectively, that students are making progress in their literacy and social-emotional development skills, and that relationships with school and district staff are strong.
 
Organization Overview
Super Stars Literacy’s mission is to give every child the foundation for lifelong learning and achievement.  Classroom teachers refer students to Super Stars Literacy classrooms, where Group Leaders provide after-school literacy support through structured, intentional, literacy based activities.  In 2011-12, Super Stars Literacy will operate in 9 schools throughout the East Bay Area and serve approximately 410 students.
 
Responsibilities
The Program Manager will manage and support a team of Group Leaders, serving as primary program staff supervisor and educational expert, and will be expected to:
 

  • Execute onboarding, training and orientation process for Group Leaders, who will likely have very basic experience in education. Training will consist of 2 weeks before program starts and ongoing weekly trainings during the school year.
  • Provide on-site support, observation and debriefs for each Group Leader at each school site every week.
  • Work with Group Leaders to create and implement strategic, enriching lesson plans.
  • Develop individualized intervention plans for all students at each program site and act as the educational steward for those plans, monitoring progress and adapting strategies as necessary.
  • Serve as administrative liaison to school principals and district staff, ensuring strong partnerships at each program site. 
  • Where applicable, assume responsibility for parent selection of SSL as Supplemental Education Services provider, ensure timely and accurate submission of student enrollment and attendance.
  • Act as the quality assurance officer for the area, ensuring that SSL programs at each school are consistent, high quality, and impactful.
  • Work with Group Leaders to establish and maintain family partnerships through ongoing communication and coordination of family events.
  • Work with the Volunteer Coordinator to ensure that volunteers are satisfied with their involvement in SSL and are well supported by Group Leaders to ensure maximum Volunteer utilization.
  • Based on qualitative and quantitative student assessment data at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year, develop action plans for students to ensure maximum literacy development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 
Working Relationships

  • Program Managers report to the Program Director.

 
Qualifications
Successful Super Stars Literacy Program Managers have a strong background in elementary education and literacy instruction for emergent and fluent readers. They have managerial skills and backgrounds and must be able to provide ongoing coaching to staff members who may have limited educational teaching experience but who are committed to developing a high-quality program. Program Managers should have experience working within school and district administrations and must be able to independently identify and troubleshoot operational challenges. Program Managers must be able to develop action plans to achieve student progress, understanding that they will be held accountable for program results

Most importantly, candidates must be committed to providing excellent educational opportunities for all students and must be willing to work enthusiastically toward achieving this goal.  Additional qualifications include:
 
Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Significant experience in elementary school education and/or reading instruction for children
  • Significant experience managing both professional staff and volunteers
  • Proven ability to provide strategic coaching and support to develop skills within others
  • Proven success in preemptively and proactively identifying and addressing problems
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability in work schedule, including some night and weekend time
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups and build meaningful strategic relationships
  • Excellent computer skills, including MS Office Applications as well as background in database management
  • Experience in producing, synthesizing and analyzing student assessment data
  • Familiarity with and experience working with literacy assessments & teaching strategies
  • Experience in working with principals, teachers and district staff to convey program success factors and challenges, as well as managing organizational relations
  • Access to reliable transportation (public transportation or personal transport) to travel within a defined geographic region on a weekly basis

 
Preferred

  • Master’s degree in education or related field
  • Experience with reading intervention or tutoring programs
  • California Teaching credential
  • Fluency in the native languages of students served (ex. Spanish, Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin)
  • Experience in curriculum development
  • Background in independent event planning

 Compensation
This is a full-time, exempt, salaried position with benefits and a generous vacation/PTO schedule including flextime options. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience..   Super Stars Literacy, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer.
